Those kids have now grown up and moved on with their own lives. Today, the lake is filled with more modern inflatables, and the laughter of children can still be heard from across the water. And yet, this slide remains. Quietly watching and waiting. As the setting sun disappears behind the trees, I began to imagine the slide and the sun having a conversation. Maybe it isn’t a conversation about what has been lost, but about what remains. The love a father puts into creating something for his children. The memories made around a cottage. The laughter that stays with a place long after the people who made it have moved on. And the knowledge that while one generation grows up, another will eventually come along to make its own memories. Maybe that’s the beautiful thing about places like this.
