Painfully Cold captures a stark and solitary scene — a lone building standing in the middle of a frozen landscape, bordered by a quiet cornfield and a still, icy pond. The space feels vast, stripped down, and deeply still.

This wasn’t a painting I initially planned to create.

A day after trudging through this frozen terrain to photograph the scene, my knee gave out. It wasn’t a serious injury, but it forced me off my feet for two weeks. That pause, however, became the push.

Something about this place stayed with me — the isolation, the silence, and the quiet curiosity of a structure that feels both present and distant at the same time. It stands there, weathered and unmoving, holding its history without offering explanation.

Returning to it on canvas became a way to reconnect with that moment — to translate not just the landscape, but the physical and emotional experience tied to it.

This piece speaks to endurance, stillness, and the unexpected ways a moment can leave its mark.

Painted with a focus on strength, atmosphere, and that feeling of standing at the edge of something vast.
