Whenever I called on my dad, he showed up — no hesitation. Through anything, he was there. That’s what stayed with me.

The night this scene unfolded, I was stopped at an intersection on my way to pick up my daughter from school. She had called, hoping to come home for reading week, and without thinking, I was already on my way. Sitting there, watching the sun fall behind a massive cloud just beyond the barn, I realized something — these were the same kinds of drives he made for me.

In that moment, past and present seemed to meet. The quiet road, the fading light, the sense of showing up without question — it all came full circle.

This painting speaks to that connection — to family, to memory, and to the ways those we’ve lost continue to move through our lives. Not always in the same form, but just as present.
