This oil painting on canvas board was inspired by a quiet rural scene I came across while walking through the countryside in Ontario. After asking the property owners for permission to walk on their land, I noticed a pair of connected buildings that immediately caught my attention.

The rear structure was clad in blue siding, attached to an open-faced barn. Inside the barn, the interior fell into deep shadow, almost pitch black, while piles of cut logs were stacked neatly within. The contrast between the dark interior and the bright exterior made the logs appear almost hidden, waiting for their next purpose. I imagine they will eventually be put to good use—perhaps milled for lumber or used to build sturdy farm fences.

In front of the barn, a line of tall golden grasses stretched across the entrance, glowing in the autumn light. Their warm colour framed the buildings and softened the rugged farm structures behind them. The scene felt calm and timeless, a quiet moment of rural life where preparation for the coming seasons quietly takes place.
